Elder is native to most of Europe and widespread in many temperate and subtropical regions of the world. Favoured by foragers, both the fragrant white flowers and the dark berries have a long tradition of culinary use.

The berries are high in active compounds rutin, hyperoside and chlorogenic acid and have long been used in traditional Scottish medicine to treat colds and flu, inflammation and infections.
Cosmetic effects include cell protection against oxidative stress, high anti-inflammatory activity, skin brightening and anti-ageing effects.

A common cold-water brown seaweed which grows solely in the Northern Atlantic Ocean.

Contains fucoidan, betaines, mannitol, organic acids, polysaccharides and amino acids. A high content of the carotenoid fucoxanthin is responsibe for the brown colour of this algae and protects it against bleaching in the sun.
